Work handoff lets one agent pick up where another stopped. A local background service turns Claude Code and Codex activity in a project into tracked work, and serves each piece of work as a handoff contract: status, completed steps, blockers, artifacts, verification, and next actions. Work handoff supports Claude Code and Codex. It is separate from skill commands, which need none of this.

Set up

init creates Gandalf’s private directories under ~/.gandalf, registers the integration in your Claude Code and Codex configuration while preserving your existing settings, and installs and starts the background service. It is safe to run again.

Check the installation

status reports whether the service is ready. doctor checks the local installation and prints a remediation for each problem it finds.

The background service

The service runs as the com.gandalf.runtime LaunchAgent for your user.

Work

All work commands are scoped to the current project; pass --project-root to choose another.

Evidence

Evidence is the recorded source material behind tracked work. It is shown redacted unless you pass --raw.

MCP server

Serves handoff context for the current project to an agent over stdio. gandalf init configures your agents to launch this; you rarely run it yourself.

What it does not do

Gandalf does not execute commands, launch agents, or assign work, and it does not sync anything to a remote server. See the trust contract.
